The Splendor of Angkor, Cambodia
Cambodia, a country usually associated with danger and death. Today it is not the case. This year it has become a much safer place to travel to, especially in Siem Reap, the area of the world famous Angkor temple complex. Cambodians are very hospitable and with what they have been through, your heart goes out to them every time.
What is Angkor? Most people think of only one temple, Angkor Wat. Actually the Angkor area covers 77 square miles in the northwestern part of the country. There are over 100 temples with many in ruins. These were built during the mighty Khmer Empire between 700AD and 1100AD.
Many of these temples are extraordinary, only the threat of the Khmer Rouge and political violence have kept this area from becoming a world class destination. This is all rapidly changing. The Khmer Rouge is history and the political situation is stabilizing. In the works is a $500 million tourist complex financed by the Malaysians including a sound and light show. Within several years this area will transform itself completely into mass tourism.
These temples need to be seen to be appreciated. Angkor Wat itself defies description. It is architectural masterpiece. Angkor Thom and the Bayon are absolutely stunning! Repeated visits are a must as viewing during changing light conditions offer a different perspective. A relaxed itinerary allows ample time to visit the temples, unhurried and with local guides to explain the history and all the details.
