American Hawaii Cruises 1982-87
I have always loved the sea and since I had worked on a cruise line before, I decided to sign up with AHC. Little did I know that I would sail the Hawaiian Islands for over five years. The Independence and Constitution were older ships (1952) that were refurbished for modern passenger travel. The Hawaiian itinerary was a 7-day cruise starting and ending in Honolulu. It went to Hilo and Kona (Big Island), Kahaluli (Maui), Nawiliwili(Kauai) and Honolulu (Oahu). It was a very exciting cruise and usually it was full with passengers.
As a crewmember it was a lot of work. I worked 7 days a week for 2-4 months straight.I was in the dining room as a waiter and also as a wine steward. The tips were good and we also were given a base salary. If one was prudent, he could save a lot of money as room and board was provided for. Sometimes I did and sometimes not. When not on the ship I was able to travel as I had as much time off as I wanted.
Overall I really enjoyed my time cruising and I was able to meet some very interesting people as well as celebrities. Some of my more famous passengers were Joe Montana, Nancy Sinatra and Barbara Eden. I met my wife to be in June of 1986 and in April of 1987 I knew my time was up this lifestyle. Lots of great memories!!!!
